API SN PLUS Lubricant Specifications

Fuel economy is an important benchmark across all areas of the automotive industry today. The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) issues GF- engine oil specifications intended to bring improvements in fuel efficiency, emissions, and engine oil robustness. ILSAC’s GF-5 specification was designed to provide improved efficiency for older vehicles. But as engine technology has evolved to include smaller, more efficient engines such as the Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDI) engine, engine oil performance needs have changed. The GF-6 specification is currently in development, and is intended to be backwards compatible with GF-5, but in the meantime, the industry will release API SN PLUS.

API SN PLUS is a new industry specification proposed by the OEM’s introducing the additional performance demand of LSPI (low-speed pre-ignition) protection to enhance the current GF-5 category. To find out more about LSPI protection, click here.
