Engine Oil SASH and GPF Compatibility in Hybrids
Hybrid vehicles create complex operating conditions for both engine oils and aftertreatment systems. This Afton Chemical study compared SAE 0W-20 oils containing 0.8% and 0.5% sulfated ash through a 100,000 km vehicle field trial and durability testing representing 250,000 km. Under the conditions tested, reducing sulfated ash from 0.8% to 0.5% did not provide a quantifiable advantage in GPF ash accumulation, backpressure, emissions or fuel consumption. The white paper explores why oil consumption, lubricant formulation, vehicle operation, and aftertreatment design should be evaluated together when developing lubricants for hybrid applications.
