Afton Chemical Presents at SAE 2016 World Congress and Exhibition

Richmond, Virginia, April 15, 2016 – The SAE 2016 World Congress and Exhibition took place in Detroit, Michigan on April 12-14, 2016. Industry experts gathered to discuss the current challenges and opportunities for future success in the automotive sector. The theme of the 2016 exhibition was Powering Possibilities, referring to the potential for untapped discoveries in the automotive industry.

Afton Chemical, along with Tsinghua University, co-presented on the effect of oil and gasoline properties on pre-ignition and super-knock, also known as low speed pre-ignition (LSPI). A phenomenon resulting from smaller, more efficient engines, LSPI may restrict automakers in their ability to maximize the performance and fuel efficiency of their advanced engine designs.

The Afton presentation discussed the results of a study where oil was directly injected into the cylinder of a research engine equipped with port fuel injection to investigate the effect of oil intrusion on pre-ignition and super-knock. The study revealed the important effects oil additives have on pre-ignition. With the understanding that engine oil formulations have to meet performance and durability requirements in addition to suppressing pre-ignition, Afton explained why a critical additive balance must be maintained for a holistic solution.
