DEXRON®-VI: The Tests of Time

In 2025, DEXRON®-VI celebrates its 20th birthday. For automatic transmission fluids (ATF), this landmark specification from General Motors (GM) marked the start of modern ATF as we know it today, enabling 6-speed automatic transmissions and higher, and Afton Chemical was a company intimately involved in the development of the specification.

To mark the occasion, we developed an article to look back at the development of DEXRON®-VI, with the help of several contributors from past and present at both GM and Afton.
