Lubricity Improvers

Desulfurization is a key driver in the push for cleaner fuels. As the sulfur level (<500ppm) in diesel fuel is reduced the inherent lubricity characteristics of the fuel are also reduced. There are two mechanisms responsible for this:

In a refinery the sulfur level of the diesel fuel is reduced by the application of various hydro-treating processes which very effectively remove sulfur & nitrogen containing compounds and these compounds are known to have good natural lubricity
The process of producing low sulfur diesel fuel also leads to a reduction in aromatic compounds and these compounds are known to have better lubricity than aliphatic compounds

Diesel fuels with poor lubricity characteristics can lead to pump wear and eventually vehicle failure so the lubrication properties of the fuel have become a key parameter of diesel fuel specifications.

Afton’s lubricity improvers help restore the natural lubricity properties that hydrotreating strips away, as well as providing the most economic route to on-specification fuel.
