Power assisted steering (PAS) reduces the effort needed by the driver to turn the steering wheel in almost every passenger car and commercial vehicle currently on the market.

An engine driven hydraulic pump supplies pressure, which is directed to the side of the steering cylinder where assistance is required. A sensor detects the direction and intensity of the driver input at the steering wheel and a control valve allocates the appropriate pressure.
