Afton participates to the UN Year of Chemistry

5/2/2011  Afton Feluy (Belgium) participates to the UN Year of Chemistry and welcomes Walloon Prime Minister Rudy Demotte at the launch of the Chemistry and Science week-end

On Wednesday, May 18th, 2011, Afton Chemical Corporation hosted the Walloon Prime Minister Rudy Demotte for the launch of the Chemistry and Science week-end at their manufacturing facility, located in Feluy, Belgium. The event was organized together with Essenscia, the Belgian Federation of Chemical Industry and Life Sciences.

During his visit, Mr. Demotte stressed the importance of the chemical industry and life sciences for the Walloon Region: it ranks as the second industrial sector in the region, directly employs 25,000 people and 40,000 people indirectly, generates 11.5 billion euros and invests 924 million euros in research and development. Mr. Demotte stressed the key role of this sector in the Walloon economy and that this has been acknowledged by the Walloon government: “I am pleased that Wallonia invests in the chemical and life sciences sector. The development of this sector is one of the priorities of the Walloon government’s strategy”.

Afton was chosen to host the event due to its reputation as a company that is aware of the challenges related to sustainable development and their continued investment in the production plant. As part of the continued investments in the Feluy facility, Afton has been able to reduce emissions in a systematic manner.

Guy Butaye, European Manufacturing Manager, said: “Afton cares about the environment and contributes to the main three pillars of sustainable development: social, environmental and economical aspects. With 160 direct employees and 260 indirect employees, an export capacity in 5 continents and a production capacity of 200,000 tons a year, we are anchored in the local community and make a significant impact on the Belgian economy. Our additives help reduce emissions as well as to improve the efficiency of motors and machines. When developing our products, our number one concern is to respect and to contribute towards the protection of the environment.”

Following the launch, Afton Feluy participated in the Open Days for the public, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to learn more about the factory and about the innovations led by the chemical industry that have an impact on their daily lives.
